The women’s field heading into the US Open is as loaded as we have seen since COVID. With so many contenders let’s take a look at the US Open Contenders and where they stand leading into the year’s final major. Headlined by an in form Ash Barty, who cruised through the western and southern open, looks like the player to beat. Also in the field are Naomi Osaka, Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep(who is battling injury) and French open champion Barbora Krejcikova just to name a few. It seems like after so many players opted not to play in last year’s event that all of the top players are back save for Serena Williams who just announced she won’t be able to play this year.

What makes this field so interesting is the quality of players ranked outside the top 10 that could make a deep run. Players like Ons Jabeur, Jen Brady, Coco Gauff, Victoria Azarenka, Camila Giorgi, Jessica Pegula, Sloane Stephens, Belinda Bencic, and Jil Tiechman have all put together impressive performances in past weeks to the point where they could all be contenders to make a deep run to the Semi Finals or beyond.

The 2 top favorites would have to be Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka. Barty is fresh off of winning Wimbledon and the tune up in Cincinnati. She has cruised through both of those dropping just 2 sets during those 2 tournaments despite playing very strong competition. Naomi Osaka is less a favorite based on recent form and more because of her pedigree as the top hard court player on tour. She lost in the western and southern open to Tiechman which looks a little better after Teichman made a run to the final. Osaka has all the weapons you can ask for and if she can get on a run in the first couple matches once she gets to the quarterfinals of a major she has never lost a match. These 2 should be the betting favorites to take home the US Open title.

After these 2, I could see a number of women making a deep run. Pliskova seems like the safest bet after she has returned to form by making deep runs in Wimbledon and Montreal. She should be able to make a run to the Quarters or Semis but she hasn’t shown the ability to beat the top players consistently deep in majors.

Sabalenka will be the 3rd seed and is trying to add to her best major result when she made the Semi final at Wimbledon. She is comfortable on hard courts and if she gets hot has the fire power to take out anyone. I just think that based on how deep the field is, it is very hard to play her style of tennis for 2 straight weeks. I would not be surprised if she was out by the 3rd or 4th round. The main dark horse contender is Angie Kerber. Kerber has shown in past tournaments that she can beat everyone except Barty and has really started playing like the major champion that she is.

There is also a healthy group of Americans that are contending and possible, of making a deep run. Headlined by Coco Gauff, Pegula, Brady, Stephens, Sofia Kenin and Danielle Collins these players will all have high hopes heading into the event. To a lesser extent Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova and Shelby Rogers will also be looking to make some noise. Out of this group Collins and Pegula have been in the best form and would be 2 that I think could make the deepest run.

The women’s field is way deeper than the mens field with more than 10 women truly hoping to take home the title. On the men’s side there are probably 4 or maybe 5 players who have legitimate title aspirations. Look for there to be a good amount of upsets and competitive early round matchups as many very good competitive players will not be seeded and will pose serious problems for some of the seeded players. Hopefully Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka can make it through to the final and we have the top 2 players in form playing each other but I would not at all be surprised if one or both are gone before then.
