Recently the news broke that quarterback Derek Carr signs extension with the Las Vegas Raiders. The contract is worth 121.5 million for 3 years extended from the last max contract he signed in 2017 which was worth 125 million. Carr has been the starting quarterback for the Raiders franchise since being drafted back in 2014 and has had some success as the leader of the offense. Carr has been selected to 3 pro-bowls and voted to the top 100 players list a few times by his peers. The Raiders organization decided to move the franchise from Oakland to Las Vegas about two years ago. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic fans were not able to attend the games in the 2020 season which left the new and improved stadium without spectators. In the 2021 season fans were now allowed to attend NFL games which excited Raiders fans because now they could experience the live games in their new home stadium in Vegas.

Before he was the starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders the future talent grew up in the state of California, Fresno to be exact. Though Carr began his high school career in Sugarland, Texas his family would eventually move back to California after his junior year. Going into his senior year at Bakersfield Christian High School Carr would win the starting quarterback job for the whole season. Carr would start all 13 games, throwing for over 4,000 passing yards and threw 46 passing touchdowns to end the season. Carr’s performance was recognized all through the state of California and all over the nation. He won countless awards after having a phenomenal senior season. Many colleges in the state of California tried to recruit Carr for his talents but he decided to stay close to home choosing Fresno State.

As a freshman Carr seen minimal playing time only playing in 4 games in the whole 2009 season. Carr’s older brother who was also a quarterback at Fresno State was on his way out the door which left the door wide open for the future star. After being redshirted in 2010 Carr would be named the starter of the Bulldogs in 2011 starting all 13 games throwing for 3, 544 passing yards, 26 touchdown passes and 9 INTs. In his junior year he would top his second season throwing for over 4,000 passing yards and threw 37 touchdowns. He would win countless awards in his conference including the MWC offensive player of the year award in 2012 season. In his final season at Fresno Carr put the Bull dogs on the map leading all FBS quarterbacks in passing yards throwing for 5,083 yards and 50 touchdowns passes. He would once again win awards for his accomplishments on the field and even got consideration for the Heisman trophy.

Carr statistically had a great college career but was projected to go in the second round of the draft because of the conference he played in. Carr would go 36th in the second round of the 2014 draft to the Oakland Raiders. Raiders were in need of new franchise quarterback since the disappointing outcome of former QB Jarmarcus Russell. Carr did not attend on the big-name schools coming into the pros, but NFL scouts seen his potential. In his rookie season Carr was named the starter of the Raiders franchise winning the team only 3 games. He put on a decent display of QB play in his second year in the league winning 7 out of 16 games and throwing for almost 4,000 passing yards and career-high 32 touchdown passes. This jump would get him to his first pro-bowl in the 2015-2016 season. Carr began to gain recognition throughout the whole NFL putting the league on notice. In his third season he helped the Raiders to a winning record with 12 wins and 3 losses missing one game. The Raiders would get a playoff berth which put them in position to face the Houston, Texans in a wild card match-up. They would suffer defeat to Houston in which Carr had to witness from the sideline.

The team also traded away Carr’s No.1 wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys leaving the offense without their top weapon.  The team would consistently miss the playoffs and even tried to bring in superstar Antonio Brown in the 2019 offseason before he forced his way out of Oakland. The team decided it was time for a change relocating to Las Vegas. Now since the NFL season is extend to 17 games Carr would have a career-high in passing yards in the 2021 season throwing for 4,804 yards. The team would finish with a record of 10 wins and 7 losses clinching another playoff berth. In his first playoff game Carr played a good game but couldn’t outlast the Cincinnati Bengals.
