At Elimination Chamber, Goldberg will square off with Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. This is a match that WWE has tried putting together for the last years. Finally, after many obstacles, it is happening. No one asked for it and I don’t think anyone cares to see it. Goldberg is a legend and has been a part of many of our childhood memories. Goldberg is 55 years old. While for 55, he is incredible shape, he is a problem. Is it his age? No. Then why is he such an issue if he’s a legend? Here’s why he, himself is an issue and he is exposing a huge issue within WWE itself.

Undeserved Championship Matches

Most of the talent in WWE will ever sniff a championship match. It sucks, but it’s true. These are the same wrestlers who come to work week in, week out. They train to perfect and hone their crafts and do whatever is necessary to get over with the fans. Being away from the families for hundreds of days, might I add. So, knowing all of this, do you think it’s fair for a 55-year-old, way past his prime Bill Goldberg should come back randomly and be rewarded such an opportunity. Not only has he gotten a title match. He’s won the actual title on multiple occasions. Most notably and one that still angers fans to this day is Goldberg beating The Fiend, Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship. This was head-scratching. Bray was the hottest wrestler in the entire world at this time.

He was the #1 merchandise seller in the company at the time as well. This being the case, you’d think Vince would want to protect his cash cow and continue to make him look strong, right? Wrong. A spear and a terrible looking Jackhammer later, Goldberg makes quick work of Bray Wyatt. This effectively killed Bray’s momentum and he never recovered. Goldberg is not a full-time wrestler. He should not be taking up a spot in spite of your crop of talent who is there every week, busting their butts.

No Investment In The Future

WWE has used Goldberg for the last few years to pop a rating or break news. You can take out Goldberg’s name and insert others like Ronda Rousey and Brock Lesnar. Although by comparison. Lesnar makes more appearances and wrestles more than Goldberg. Lesnar is also a bigger name. That’s fine and all. But this has to be demoralizing and frustrating for the guys and girls in the back. They clamor for an opportunity only to have it taken away by someone who shows up once or twice a year and getting paid way more money to do so. I get it. Big names get the big bucks. But use the big names to get your current stars over and add value to their names as well. The part-time big names are already made. At this point, they are bulletproof. Their legacies are sealed, signed, and delivered. A perfect example of using a big name correctly is John Cena. Cena carried the company for 15 years. No one worked harder or did more. Now that has stepped into the Hollywood scene, we don’t see Cena as much.

He understands that the current crop of talent needs to be put at the forefront of everything, not himself.

Last time we saw Cena, he lost to Roman Reigns at Summerslam. Cena was there to sell tickets and put butts in seats. He did that just by showing up and having his name on the poster. Roman is there every week, he got the win to continue his momentum. This is how Goldberg should be used for the most part. If you want to make him believable, have him win matches with no title on the line. Why does he need a title shot? WWE refuses to build their next big star instead of relying on their past big stars. Once the Cena’s and the Brock’s and the Goldberg’s retire or can’t wrestle anymore, then what? Who do you turn to? WWE has to start building stars so they can have multiple names to rely on in any given situation.
