The NHL trade deadline was on March 21st and since then the players bought and dealt have been able to play multiple games. Now is the time to look back on the trades made by certain teams and see if the right decisions were. The teams have been locked in after the NHL Trade Deadline.

Was that player worth a first-round pick? Should one team have sold more than they did? And which team could’ve done more to help their playoff run chances?

Calgary Acquiring Tyler Toffoli

This acquisition happened weeks before the deadline, but it has payed off for both teams. The Montreal Canadiens, one of the worst teams in the league this year, began their selling with Toffoli.

Calgary acquired Toffoli while the Canadiens got a 2022 first round draft choice, a 2024 fifth round draft pick, forward Tyler Pitlick, and prospect Emil Heinemann.

Calgary acquires another forward to add the scoring that has primarily came from their top line during their dominant regular season. He has already scored nine goals and nine assist for Calgary. And the Habs sell early, set the market, and get much needed draft choices. A win-win for both parties.

Marc-Andre Fleury to the Minnesota Wild

Easily the biggest name that was on the trade block. Everyone wanted to know if Stanley Cup and Vezina winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was going to be traded from the Chicago Blackhawks. Several teams were in the running but it later broke that the aptly nicknamed Flower would be rocking green for the rest of the season.

Chicago received a 2022 second round pick that could turn into a first depending on how well Fleury does for the Wild. This is another trade that works for both parties. Both Chicago and Minnesota made big splashes during the NHL trade deadline.

Toronto raised Mark Giordano come Home

Bad defense has been a topic for the Toronto Maple Leafs for years. Despite drafting and making Morgan Rielly the defenseman he is, or acquiring Jake Muzzin years ago, their defense is weak. That changed once the team acquired Toronto born Mark Giordano.

Giordano spent all his long career with the Calgary, being a captain and winning a Norris, before being selected by Seattle in the expansion draft. Since Giordano has been with the Leafs, he has very noticeably has calmed the blueline. A much-needed move for the Maple Leafs.

Giroux goes down South

This one hurt a lot of hockey fans, but it was one of the more entertaining trades to watch go down. Claude Giroux is synonymous with Philadelphia sports. He was drafted by the Flyers in 2006, groomed to be their captain, and spent 1000 games with the Flyers. All the time, hard work, and leadership unfortunately did not combinate in a Stanley Cup win.

Giroux, days after playing his 1,000th game as a Flyer, waived him no movement clause to go to the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are a front runner this year, and Giroux’s family agreed on Florida versus the other places interested in Giroux like Colorado.

Tyler Motte and Andrew Copp to the Big Apple

The Rangers needed to solidify their bottom six as the regular reason comes to an end. As the season has gone on the question on if the Rangers are as good as their record says or if their goalies have carried them to this point.

The Rangers needed bulk up on their forward to not only help with depth scoring but also with defense. They acquired Tyler Motte from Vancouver Canucks and Copp from the Winnipeg Jets.
