For starters, let me make it clear. Do not draft a defense until you have at least your starting line up filled out. Defenses are key in fantasy as they can sometimes make or break a week. Ever lose a matchup by a point or two? With your defense giving you negative points? It hurts and streaming defenses is something I’d rather not entertain. Everyone needs a defense they can have confidence in every single week. No stress for that position. Just a set it and leave it. Let’s discuss what I think will be the top five defenses in fantasy football this season.

Number 5: Washington Football Team

To be honest, I am a believer in this football team. Washington’s defense has come alive with rookie and now second year player, Chase Young. Chase brings the fire that is needed on defense. He was a leader from day one and is the centerpiece of the entire defense. Washington allowed the fourth fewest points in the 2020 season. You want your defense on fantasy to create turnovers and not allow so many points. Washington is good at both. The football team allowed the second fewest passing yards a game last season too at 191.8 yards. Washington’s defense was most impressive in not having a week putting up negative fantasy points. They also had six games with 10 or more points. That 10 plus points from a defense is key in weekly matchups.

Number four: Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are dangerous. Philip Rivers walked off into the sunset and now, its Carson Wentz. It is time to prove all the doubters wrong. What makes it easy for a quarterback to thrive is a lethal defense to ease pressure off of the offense. The Colts have just that with leader Darius Leonard. The Colts were second in total rush yards allowed per game at 90.5. They also had 25 takeaways which had them with the sixth most in the NFL. Turnover are keys when it comes to a fantasy defense. Those extra points off a fumble plus the recovery. The six points for a defensive touchdown or maybe its a week matchup winning forced fumble with the touchdown. That happened to me two years ago with the last remaining seconds ticking away. Got to love fantasy.

I truly believe the Colts will be slept on for the duration of the season. All the talk and eyes are on the Titans, but the Colts are there. They are going to one of the more balanced teams from top to bottom. The defense will cause havoc with Deforest Buckner on the line and cause confusing with Darius Leonard leading the charge.

Number three: Baltimore Ravens

All in all, this is one of my favorite teams ever. I have picked their defense in at least one of my leagues the past five seasons. The Ravens are what you want when it comes to a defense. Create chaos, havoc and get those points. The Ravens were top ten in yards allowed per game, rush yards per game and pass yards per game. They also allowed the second fewest points which is GOLD. They have been a top three pick for as long as I can remember in fantasy when it came to defenses. When you think of defense, you think of teams such as the Steelers and the Ravens. There is only one thing that will hold the Ravens back some this year. They have one of the hardest schedules this upcoming season.

Number two: Pittsburgh Steelers

The rivals of the Ravens. The Steelers are another franchise that is known for defenses. Having of the best ones all of last season, they should be at full strength. Getting Bud Dupree back at 100% and a Broward County native, Devin Bush. The Steelers feasted with takeovers last year having the second most at 27! The defense was top three in passing yards allowed per game, total yards allowed per game and least amount of points allowed per game. Minkah FItzpatrick has proved to play a vital role in leading that secondary. I expect the Steelers to have one of the best defenses as usual and to have at least another 15 takeaways minimum with the pressure they put on opposing quarterbacks.

Number one: Los Angeles Rams

The most deadliest man is on the Rams. A top three player in the entire league for the past three seasons or so. Aaron Donald makes this Ram defense a new type of scary. Then, you throw in Jalen Ramsey on the outside with all the other talent. Names like Leonard Floyd and Jordan Fuller compliment the two leaders very well. The Rams were top five in total yards allowed a game, fewest points allowed per game, rush yards per game, rush yards per attempt, pass yards per attempt and passing yards allowed. The Rams were number one in four of those categories! This is a defense you take in the 8th round and do not regret it whatsoever. A defense that can give you at least 8 points a game with a high probability of scoring double digits is a championship winning type of defense.
