This season has been one of the most exciting seasons in recent history. Just in the past month, we’ve seen players erupt for 50 points, and for some it’s been multiple games. We’ve also seen a difference in who the top players in the league are. For the past couple of the years it’s always been Lebron, KD, Stephen Curry, Kawhi, or James Harden as the head of the table when it came to the NBA. Now, we see more of the front court taking charge over the league. We also have seen a number of point guards shine this year. Here’s is a list of the top 5 point guards this season.

5. Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving has been the topic of discussion for the league this past year. With knocking injuries and his views on social and political, Kyrie was painted as someone who disregards the game. Even with his decline to get vaccinated, that made him public enemy number one with sports talk shows and critics. To some it was speculated that he didn’t love basketball any longer. Fast forward to last night, he capped off an overwhelming performance with 60 points shooting an efficient 20 of 31 from the fielded 8 of 12 from three. In his last three games, he’s scored 60 points, 50 points, and 38 points.

However, what makes Kyrie a top five point guard is his ability to get any shot he wants. Usually the job of the point guard is to set up the offense and facilitate, but Kyrie’s way of setting up the offense is getting to his spot on the floor. He can adjust his body to create contact while keeping poise when attacking the rim. Kyrie Irving is regarded as the most skilled player by some, with his elite bag of tricks that just might be the case. The interesting part is that he’s only playing away games and doing this. The playoffs will be very interesting, especially if he can play both home and away games.

4. Trae Young

Trae Young has left a lasting impression last year in the playoffs, especially to New York Knicks AND Sixers fans. He’s fully taken on the villainous role in the Eastern Conference. Despite his team being down in 9th place and in contention for the play in game, he’s having a solid year. Trae Young is averaging 28 points and 9 assists this year. He’s been often compared to Stephen Curry because of his range and playmaking ability, but there’s much more to his game than that.

Trae Young’s confidence is astounding. He’s only been in the league for 4 years and is already one of the top guards in the league. His screen and role game with Cappella and John Collins is the strength of their offense. The best aspect of Trae Young’s game is that he attack the pick and roll versus being passive out of it. He attacks his mismatches and gets to his spots frequently and if it’s not there, he can easily pass the ball out for a good shot. We could possibly be looking at a future MVP of the league.

3. Luka Doncic

The Dallas Mavericks saw something in Luka which prompted them to trading for him in the 2018 draft, but he has exceeded expectations. Luka plays an unorthodox version of basketball which allows him to control the flow of the game. He has a potent setback jumpsuit that is comparable to James Harden. He sees the floor and can make any pass. He’s helped with the load getting the Mavericks to the 5th spot in the Western Conference. Luka is averaging 28 points, 9 rebounds, along with 8 assists.

Along with his size, Doncic is a crafty player who doesn’t get enough credit when it comes to drawing contact at the rim. He plays at his own pace which could throw off defenders and allows him to get any bucket he wants. Luka has also been at his best in the playoffs, showing his skill and fortitude. Hopefully with Jason Kidd as his coach, along with Spencer Dinwiddie as help, Dallas can make a deep run in the playoffs.

2. Stephen Curry

When talking about the best point guards in the league, Stephen Curry’s name is alway in the mix. Stephen Curry is a point guard most coaches dream about. He’s arguably the greatest shooter to ever play, he a great decision maker, and a good ball handler. However, what he doesn’t get enough credit for which is unfair is his ability to facilitate. It’s aware that he plays majority of the ball running around around screens, however, he still averages 6 assists this season. That is due to the fact that he brings so much attention to himself. Him and Draymond mesh so well together because they both can facilitate at any time.

Curry is also averaging 25 points, and just this year he’s broken Ray Allen’s record for most career three pointers made. There could also be a case that makes Curry the greatest point guard of all time, but he is and will alway be one of the greatest point guards of all time. He could honestly be the best right now if it wasn’t this guy here.

1. Ja Morant

From hitting the gritty dance after getting a poster dunk, to shooting from Curry-like range, Ja Morant has put on a show for the fans this year. Ja Morant has taken a rebuilding Memphis Grizzlies organization and turned them into a playoff team in the matter of 3 years. Morant is also having his best year so far averaging 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. Many people have compared this year’s performance to Derrick Rose’s MVP year where he averaged around the same amount and lead that Chicago Bulls team to a top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Despite both of the season’s being comparable, so are both of their games. Derrick Rose was an explosive guard who could get to the rim at will. Ja Morant is also polished at getting to the rim, and he is crafty at it as well. His energy that he brings night in and night out is what’s going to make this team very hard to beat in the playoffs.
