Jerseys and kits are seen as symbols for a sports team. They represent not only the players, but the community that surrounds said team. Each iteration of a jersey comes with years of history of what is happened during the game and outside of it.

Tradition comes to mind when thinking about if something is iconic or not. Despite the other jerseys that may come before or after, iconic jerseys are engrained in the fabric of the sport the team plays in. Here is a list of 10 of the most iconic sports jerseys and kits. 

New York Yankees Pinstripe

This uniform includes the team colors of navy blue, gray, and white. The pin stripe design accompanied by the navy interlocked N and Y to represent New York. The pinstripe was added in the uniforms in 1912 then re-added permanently in 1915. Like the legacy the team has on the field, this unform has a long history and is considered one of the sharpest baseballs unforms to this day.

Dallas Cowboys Navy Resurgence 

Dubbed America’s team, it is no surprise that the Cowboys would be on this list. The Cowboys have changed their jerseys many times since the 1960s. The electric navy, white, and gray stayed throughout each change, but the most well-known look is the one they have now. It is inspired by past jerseys. The stripes from the 67, the navy of the 80s, and the silver accents from the 90s. Having football stars like Ezekiel Elliot and Dak Prescott wearing the jersey only adds to its flair.

Montreal Canadiens 1920s Throwback

As one of the Original Six teams of the National Hockey League, the Canadiens are steeped on history. The Habs are the longest running professional hockey team; founded in 1909, the team has many jerseys that goes with each era. The most well-known iteration is all red with the blue stripe that crosses the chest and arms. The capital H inside the large C is now synonymous with the Habs and their winning pedigree.

Los Angeles Lakers Gold

Very few people remember the early jerseys of the Lakers. For Brazilians, the yellow is sacred. An interesting kit with an even more interesting backstory. Brazil began wearing their yellow kits in 1953 after a competition was launched by a newspaper. The then 18-year-old Aldyr Garcia Schlee entered the competition with an illustration of players wearing bright yellow and green. The bright canary yellow with green trim is legendary in the soccer world. 

Classic Alabama Crimson

The University of Alabama football team has changed their uniform very little considering the teams over 100-year history. There’s only been 12 uniforms worn by the prolific college team. The home crimson helmet, crimson jersey, and white pants represents the best of Saturday football. It is simple and classic.

Michigan Yellow and Blue 

Another iconic college football team uniform. The Detroit Blue is recognizable across the country. The yellow compliments the dark blue perfectly. The 1997 Wolverine uniform consist of a blue jersey with maize numerals. 

UCLA Bruins Basketball

Yellow seems to be a theme in jerseys and the University of California Los Angeles is no stranger to that. Worn by legends like Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the jersey is cobalt blue with bright yellow numbers and trimming. Other iterations include the white jersey with light blue numbers and letters and yellow trimming.

Boston Celtics

The green and white uniform has been worn by Bill Russell, Larry Bird, and Paul Pierce. Like the jersey of their rival, the Los Angeles Lakers, the standout green is exemplary of a time of yesteryear in basketball.
