On Wednesday, Serena Williams announced that she will be pulling out of the US Open to recover from a hamstring injury. The six time champion of the US Open will have to wait a little longer to try to tie the Grand Slam Record.

Williams has been in pursuit of the most Grand Slam titles in tennis, but has not won a major event since the Australia Open in 2017.

She made the 2021 Australia Open Semifinals but was forced to pull out of Wimbledon with an injury and lost in the French Open in the fourth round.

Williams wrote in an Instagram post, “After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring.”

“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”

Since Serena Williams started to appear in major events in 1998, Williams has only missed the US Open three times. She’s won the events times. including three consecutive championships between 2012 and 2014.

In 2020, she lost in the semifinals to Naomi Osaka and in the final in 2018. She also lost in the final to Bianca Andreescu in a huge upset in 2019.

Williams hasn’t competed since June when she injured her right leg in the first set of her first round match at Wimbledon.

At Wimbledon, Williams was serving while leading 3-1 in her opening match when her left shoe seemed to lose its traction while she was hitting a forehand and her right leg flexed awkwardly. She tried to continue but eventually needed to stop playing.

Williams is still at the top of her game and it seems hopeful she will tie Margaret Court for most Grand Slam titles.

Margaret Court set the record in 1970 after winning 24 Grand Slam titles. Williams currently has 23 Grand Slam titles to her name and is one Grand Slam away tying Court.
