Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr wasted no time speaking his thoughts on Twitter explaining: “I need fight for a title next.. tune-up fights for guys who are unsure of themselves.” Spence Jr is coming off an eye surgery in his left eye and is already looking to fight the next available champion in the welterweight division. As of now, there are two fighters who hold belts in the division: Yordenis Ugás and Terrance Crawford. Spence is looking to challenge either one of these fighters sooner than later, but what can these fighters bring to the table other than belts? Welterw

Spence’s First Candidate: Yordenis Ugás Welterweight Title

WBA champion Yordenis Ugás came up in a surprising upset against legend Manny Pacquiao on August 10 to win the WBA title. Originally, Pacquiao held the title but had to relinquish it due to inactivity giving it to Ugás. Spence was supposed to fight Pacquiao for the title but was pulled out immediately due to medical attention in his left eye. Ugás is a fighter who’s been in the division for some time showcasing a high volume of punches who goes toe to toe with his opponents. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach told DAZN, “He’s not a typical Cuban boxer that’s really slick or anything like that. This guy is going for the knockout and looking for the knockout all the time.” Spence’s jab can certainly play a key factor in keeping Ugás at a good distance landing necessary combinations after the jab is thrown. Ugás is not known as a KO fighter as he lacks power with his punches, so Spence can take advantage of this with his powerful left hand that leaves many fighters questioning their game plan.

Spence’s Second Candidate: Terrence Crawford

Terrence Crawford is no stranger to the welterweight division and to Spence. Crawford currently holds the WBO title with a record of 37 wins and zero losses with 28 of those wins coming by KO. Crawford and Spence have been going back and forth since their arrival in the welterweight division about who’s the better 147 lb fighter. Experts say it’s Crawford while others say Spence, but either way, both of these fighters are going to clash sooner than later. This is a perfect match that will have many boxing fans talk about it for years to come as both fighters bring styles unheard of in the welterweight division. Crawford’s orthodox/southpaw stance is the perfect test for Spence’s power and chin. Spence isn’t known to have a good defence and so Crawford can test his chin out by switching stances to test which hand can do more damage.

Who will Spence choose? Welterweight Title

It’s unknown who Spence wants after this tweet, but we can expect something to happen sometime next year. Ugás and Crawford are worthy opponents for Spence to face, but who’s to say what Spence wants? Only himself. If Spence does decide to fight Crawford and Ugás the same year or in whatever timeline he chooses, what’s next for him? Keep looking for new opponents entering the welterweight division, look for a rematch with Crawford and Ugás, or try his luck in the 154 lb super welterweight division?
